History Of Highland, Indiana

Lake County is located 25 miles S. of the Loop. Michael and Judith Johnson, originally from Ohio, were the first settlers in the area that would later become Highland. Their son, Rod Johnson, discovered a flock frozen in the ice of the Little Calumet River in Indiana one winter. He was able to harvest enough ducks with a stick to purchase 20 acres of land. If they consented to drain the land, they could purchase large tracts of land at $1.25 an acre under Congress's Swamp Land Act.

Plum Creek and Aaron Hart both

Aaron Hart, a book publisher based in Philadelphia, was another buyer of property in Highland. Hart Ditch was the name given to Plum Creek, which proceeded from Dyer into the Little Calumet.

John Clough & The Chicago & Atlantic Railroad

In the year 1883, the Chicago & Atlantic Railroad made a tour through the area. After surveying miles and miles of swamp, railroad surveyors called it the "Highlands". A significant landowner named John Clough was the person responsible for platting the town. For mail delivery purposes, the area was briefly called Clough Postal Station. However, the railroads surveyors chose Highland.

Soon after, Dutch colonists moved in from the neighboring town of Munster to start a new life in Highland. They contributed a lot of the cabbage needed to build the first industry in the town, the kraut factory. The village also possessed a second kraut factory, a cement block industry, and a brick production plant.

Wicker Memorial Park

Numerous additional railroads also traveled through the area in the early 1900s, which boosted agricultural as well as other enterprises. Highland, which had a population totaling 304, was established in 1910. The Farmers and Merchants Bank was the pioneering financial institution that started it all. Additionally, a volunteer brigade in addition to a fire brigade were both established in the year 1914. A dedication ceremony for Wicker Park, which had previously been a pasture, was presided over by President Calvin Coolidge and paid tribute to the veterans who served during World War I.

The public education system in the town of Highland is known as the School Town of Highland, and it is responsible for the administration of Highland High School, which first opened its doors in 1957, in addition to a middle school and four primary schools. A gazebo, which had been located at the spot where the old Main School had been before it was demolished in October 2006 and rebuilt the following year, now stands in that spot. Main Square Park is the name given to both the structure and the surrounding grounds, which honors the now-defunct school that occupied the location up until 1977. In the early 1980s, Lincoln Elementary School, which was also one of the other closed schools, was repurposed into a community center. The other school, Orchard Park Elementary, was one of the two that closed its doors in 1981 and was eventually acquired by Calumet Baptist School and reopened as a school in the early 1990s.
